Circular Block
Wa Uke
Circular receiving block blending into a deflection
Key steps
- Prepare the hands on a circular path with the elbows relaxed so the block can wrap smoothly around the attacking line.
- Use a rounded receiving action that blends deflection and redirection rather than trying to stop the attack dead.
- Coordinate the circle with hip turn and body angle so the movement stays connected to your stance.
- Finish in control of the line, then return to guard or flow directly into the next technique.
Coaching points
- Use the whole body to support the block, not just the arm.
- Keep the blocking shape compact and efficient.
- Finish balanced and ready to counter.
