Punch delivered with a vertical fist alignment
Key steps
- Set a balanced stance and align the fist vertically with the thumb side facing upward.
- Punch straight down the center line while keeping the elbow close and the wrist stacked behind the striking surface.
- Use the hips to support the thrust but avoid over-rotating the forearm, because the fist should stay vertical at impact.
- Recover to guard smoothly and keep the shoulders relaxed so the next technique can follow without delay.
Coaching points
- Let the hips and stance drive the punch rather than the shoulder alone.
- Keep the elbow line tight so the strike travels straight.
- Return the opposite hand with intent to finish the technique cleanly.
