Open Stance
Hachiji Dachi
Natural open stance with heels closer and toes turned outward
Key steps
- Place the feet about hip width apart and turn the toes outward so the stance opens slightly at the front.
- Spread the weight evenly through both feet and keep the knees soft instead of rigidly locked.
- Stay upright through the spine with the hips level, shoulders relaxed, and the head facing straight ahead.
- Hold the stance naturally and calmly so it feels neutral, stable, and ready for movement.
Coaching points
- Keep the posture calm, balanced, and alert.
- Stay light enough to move without needing a reset.
- Use the stance as a prepared starting base, not a dead pause.
